The Botanists Were Right About Everything.
The Spanish missionaries who found this flower in the 1500s decided it was a sermon. The crown of thorns in the filaments, the nails in the stigmas, the wounds in the stamens. They named it for the Passion and moved on.
The people already living there called it maracuyá, from the Tupi. That's the name that stuck.
